VIRUS ALERTS
What a weekend it has been for viruses.
EMAIL
VIRUS ALERT:
I
received a very sneaky virus by email today. Norton did
not detect it because it is too new. It masquerades as a
Microsoft security patch. The subject line is:
Subject
line: Latest Network Security Pack
It
tries to trick you into clicking the attachment which is a virus
(pack62.exe or some such). Here is how you ALWAYS avoid
these things:
1.
Microsoft and other companies never send out patches or programs
2.
YOU never click any attachment that is program (OUTLOOK
will warn you once), like
BAD
LIST: .vb, .scr, .pif, .exe
3,
You are only allowed to click
Good
List: .JPG, .GIF, .TXT, .MPG, .MP3,maybe .HTM
4.
You keep your Norton up to date.
5. And
you keep your PC support up to date with a qualified vendor.
EBAY
Identity theft (pfishing):
I
received an email from EBAY asking me to update my
information. It was completely fraudulent and meant to
steal my social security number and other user IDs. The
way they did it was by 'spoofing' a link to ebay. You can
tell because the location that you actual go to IS NOT EBAY.
Always
check the web site address. 211.243.5.67 is NOT a good
one.
never
update information from a link in email. If you think it
suspicious, go to the website directly using the proper www
address.
